Conserving energy means preserving the planet!

Energy! Granted, everything requires energy, right from our most fleeting thoughts to launching a moon rocket. That is a fact that we cannot change, our very survival as with everything on this planet depends on energy. However, what we can change is the wastage of energy.

We don’t have to be scientists to work out how to conserve energy and prevent wastage. Our ancestors were prodigiously wasteful when it came to the consumption of the earth's energy resources and the ill effects of this on future generations. But they can be forgiven for lack of awareness due to plain ignorance. We cannot apply the same yardstick to ourselves, we live in an age where we apparently follow the dictates of science. We are aware of the disastrous effects of wanton exploitation of the earth's energy resources and the consequent poisoning of our environment from uncontrolled usage.

We have been tutored on the energy crisis to the point of being bored to tears, whilst being harangued on 'what' is required but not often told 'how' we should go about it. The situation though of catastrophic proportions can be avoided by the simplest of solutions, namely, intelligent and logistical planning. Something as simple as planning our shopping list so as to avoid multiple trips to the grocery store, turning off the lights in unoccupied rooms, limiting the use of paper or using recycled paper, consciously segregating trash, etc.

Small though these efforts seem, they are within the purview of each one of us and if followed conscientiously by all, the cumulative effect will be phenomenal. The earth is our home and the only one we have, so let's work towards keeping it habitable, not only for ourselves but for our children.
